I Am Home Brewing Some Hard Apple Cider. How Do I Calculate The Percent Alcohol Of My Final Brew?

Author: Staff  //  Category: Home Brewing Recipes

You have to measure the specific gravity of your apple juice before you add the yeast (this is called your “original gravity” or OG). In other words, you need a hydrometer to measure this.
Then, when the cider is done, you measure the specific gravity again (this will be your “final gravity” or FG).
The difference between OG and FG determines the actual alcohol made.

  1. I can do it for you if you tell me in precise measurements how much of it was cider and how much was alcohol. But if you want to do it you could multiply each to a total of 100 and then find the (complex) number you multiplied to get it and then multiply that by the measurements. Unless you want to do it the easy way and tell me the measurements :D

  2. There’s 10% alcohol in your final brew. 14% is the max

  3. They might sell a little densiometer that floats in the liquid. Maybe try a place with beermaking supplies?
Or if not that, maybe carefully measure out exactly 100 mL into a beaker, and weigh it.
If you can get the density, you can estimate the alcohol content.
