Yeast Stirplate – Home Brew Equipment

posted on February 4, 2010 in Home Brewing Recipes

A video for a home brew friend. This electric stirplate propagates yeast. You add wort to the flask, and then add in a few teaspoons of yeast, and overnight, the stir plate will spin at a high velocity, and speeds up the propagation of yeast because of constant movement and the introduction of air. When this yeast starter is then added to 5 gallons of wort, it comes to live almost immediately, – there is no waiting period, as you would have when you add dry yeast to your 5 gallons of wort, – like you would if you buy beer “kits” in a can from your local home brew beer store. There is a tiny piece of magnetized metal in the flask, which is covered by ceramic or plastic, there is a magnet in the stir plate machine ( the black box ) , this magnet is attached to the little fan blades on a tiny motor ( a fan if you will ) , the fan starts to rotate, making the magnet on the fan rotate, and this in effect starts to make the little “stir bar” in the glass flask start to rotate, and the magic begins.
